Supporting Coordinated, Trauma-Informed Responses

Adult Forensic Interviews (AFIs) are specialized investigative services designed to support adult victim survivors while strengthening multidisciplinary responses to violence and other traumatic crimes.

TXFNE pioneered Adult Forensic Interview services in Texas, developing the AFI model to address a critical gap in trauma-informed services for adult victim survivors. Today, TXFNE operates the state’s largest and most established Adult Forensic Interview program.

Adult Forensic Interviewing continues to gain recognition as communities across the country seek more effective, trauma-informed approaches to supporting adult victim survivors.

Who Can Refer an AFI?

Adult Forensic Interviews are available through referrals from:

  • Law enforcement agencies

  • District Attorney offices

AFIs are not self-referred. Every referral is carefully reviewed to ensure an Adult Forensic Interview is the most appropriate response for the participant and the investigative needs of the case.

Benefits of Multidisciplinary Teams

Adult Forensic Interviews help:

  • Reduce the need for multiple interviews

  • Improve information gathering

  • Support trauma-informed responses

  • Increase access to specialized expertise

  • Strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration

  • Improve access to victim-centered services

  • Promote coordinated decision-making

Observation & Coordination

Interviews are observed in real time by a member of the investigative team in accordance with established protocols.

This process supports communication, coordination, and informed decision-making while helping reduce the burden on victim survivors to repeatedly recount traumatic experiences.

Recording & Documentation

Interviews are recorded to help reduce the need for victim survivors to repeatedly share traumatic experiences and to support continuity within the multidisciplinary response.

All interviews are conducted using professional standards, evidence-based practices, and trauma-informed principles.

Tele-Forensic Interview Capability

TXFNE offers Tele-Forensic Interviews (TFIs), when appropriate, to improve access to specialized forensic interview services.

Prior to scheduling a Tele-Forensic Interview, TXFNE works with the referring agency to help ensure a safe, secure, and appropriate interview environment.
